Lunar Converter App

In the spirit of Chinese New Year, I made a little converter for the lunar calendar (https://lunar-converter.netlify.com/). I built this in my spare time, in the week leading up to CNY but failed to deploy it anywhere as things have been busy (just moved country!) The Lunar Converter allows you to find Chinese New Year and Qingming (Tomb Sweeping day) for any given year, as well as your original and current Chinese birthday in the Western Gregorian calendar. A React x Typescript x Styled Components creation 🙂 The conversions are done through date-chinese, so it was all pretty easy. It’s a bit bumpy, but it’ll do, as a quick side thing.

I never know when Chinese New Year is for any given year and though this is a googlable fact, google doesn’t have the nice little red-packet inspired design I mocked up. (The only way I can justify its use and existence.) We also used to celebrate Chinese birthdays when I was a kid, but I never knew when mine was coming up! And, if I so happened to be in Malaysia during my holidays when Qingming fell, we’d carry out the appropriate traditions. I recall this to be mostly folding paper money, burning paper money, cleaning graves (obvs), prayers I didn’t understand, preparing food to leave out, roasting in the outdoor Malaysian heat, etc etc.

So, these are three vaguely important Chinese dates for me, even if I had been somewhat removed from my culture while growing up in Australia… voila, lunar converter ~
